Spring 2023 Update

  • 4 min read

Dear Friends of RabunYES,

It is rather cold here in the mountains and some of us had believed springtime already started and then suddenly went away. No matter what the temperature, RabunYES is heating up with activities and even looking forward to summer. Respecting your time, you will never receive communications from us beyond the quarterly updates. Detailed current information appears on our Facebook page for those desiring to maintain more frequent contact.

Highlights of the quarter follow:

• RabunYES is offering a homeschool tutorial program to parents of high school students on March 28th in the Rabun County Library at 11 am. The program will focus particularly around State of Georgia requirements, methods of standardized testing and preparation for college applications as a homeschooled youth.

• There remain slots available for our graduating seniors to attend confidential personal interviews to practice for the real thing. RabunYES has pulled together experts in various fields along with professionals willing to team interview either high school or college seniors seeking employment. The practice interviews will last 30 minutes followed by constructive suggestions to youth, giving them valuable feedback and interviewing experience. Contact RabunGA.Youth@gmail.com & type ‘Interview” in the subject line and we will help set it up.

• RabunYES had offered to assist the Rabun County Library by funding its summer reading program either in part or in whole for 2023. Details will be discussed with the Library during April.

• We will be participating with Foxfire’s summer internship program both financially and with teaching resources as more information becomes available and the needs of Foxfire become known. In 2021, RabunYES provided a finance lecture to interns and enjoyed the experience. In summer 2023 we hope to play a stronger role.

• Three (3) summer camp scholarships have been funded by RabunYES to 4-H Club in Rabun County to pay for youth whose families would not otherwise be able to send their kids to camp. 4-H does super work, and we hope to form as lasting relationship with them.

• Our Scout Troop 19, as chartered by RabunYES had a great experience at Place of Hope in March, learning about their work with young people in difficult situations, transitioning into and through the foster care system. Combined with the Scouts’ experiences at AVITA, the Troop is learning how blessed they are while being exposed to the more difficult life situations and conditions experience by many others. While the Scouts are pulling together resources for Place of Hope on their own, RabunYES’ Board will be discussing how we can financially support educational materials and supplies to that organization.

• RabunYES participated in the highly successful Region 2 Community Fair of GA Family Connection during February. We hope to be represented next year as the venue is expanded further and it attracts more tax-exempt organizations.

• A check for $500 is being provided by RabunYES to the Foodbank of Northeast Georgia in recognition of its superb kitchen teaching program for youth. Trophies will be presented shorty to first through third place winners (Scouts) who are selected for their culinary skills learned and applied at the Foodbank.
