Dear Friends of RabunYES,
How did we know it is time for a Summer Update? Ans: The heat and humidity hit us fast and hard! Some kids are being sent to summer camp, with RabunYES funding them and organizations like Foxfire have outdoor activities to include their recent festival and their Summer Youth Leadership Program (see first bullet point). The heat does not stop kids. Stay cool, stay hydrated and we will all get through it.
A brief update of activities follows:
• During the entire month of June, RabunYES is running a matching-gift program to help sponsor the Foxfire Summer Youth Leadership Program. Our goal is to raise $5,000 which then gets matched by another $5,000 (or whatever is raised), Thus, we may be able to provide $10,000. A check will be written to Foxfire right after the July 4th holiday giving the program a full month. As of this Update $2,945 has been raised (and would be matched). The program is honoring Jean Buckridge, who passed away almost eleven months ago and loved teaching and encouraging children. As a librarian-specialist in bi-lingual reading programs she earned a master’s degree in library science from University of South Florida. A gift of ANY size would be appreciated. ▪ RabunYES is awaiting a decent sized class of parents who are interested in the home-schooling of high school students. Of course, we would like to hold this one-time seminar a month ahead of the start of the new school year. The session will be focused upon resources and requirements in the State of Georgia, to include local support groups. As more people are considering home schooling, RabunYES can fast-track the parental learning curve. Contact Lisa Broz, Lisabroz@yahoo.com if interested.
• Three (3) kids are at 4-H summer camp, paid for by RabunYES. As summer camp costs continue to rise, many youths’ parents are unable to afford the money required to attend. Every year we try to send 3-4 kids to camp.
• RabunYES is sponsoring the STEM learning program at the Rabun County Library this summer. This involved funding a very fun LEGO program. The material purchases have been made and we are just awaiting the invoice.
▪ Troop 6, BSA Scouts are currently at Philmont High Adventure Scout Reservation in New Mexico. RabunYES funded around $2,600 of the costs involved in the High Adventure trip. Given the altitude, the Scouts are likely much cooler than here in Rabun County.
Have a blessed and safe summer
